Study Groups

Helping minority students make the grade in honors classes

IMANI organizes study groups for students in Grades 9-12.  Study groups provide additional instruction to help students of color succeed academically in Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors level courses while feeling connected to the school community.

Many students who take part in IMANI study groups improve their academic performance by a letter grade or more.

IMANI study groups have been offered in Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, English, and History. The sessions are led by certified high school teachers or professionals with formal training in the subject area in which they are tutoring.

Study groups provide a safe learning environment for peer mentoring and tutoring.

This helps students:

  • Develop more confidence in their ability to succeed in Advanced Placement and Honors level courses
  • Gain familiarity asking questions about challenging concepts
  • Attain a better grasp of subject matter
  • Feel less isolated in the classroom

IMANI study groups meet on Sunday afternoons from 2-4 pm at the Montclair Public Library:
50 South Fullerton Ave, Montclair, NJ

Study groups begin before the end of the first marking period and continue through the end of the school year, following the Montclair Public Schools calendar. See the IMANI Study Group schedule.

“My high schooler was very reluctant to participate in the study group.  This year, I gently coaxed him into trying it. Being with other motivated kids helped him realize that there are other students who are working hard.  They are all good role models. We are grateful to IMANI for helping to give some discipline and structure to his academic life.”
