Study Groups
Helping minority students make the grade in honors classes
IMANI organizes study groups for students in Grades 9-12. The goal of the groups is to provide additional instruction to
help students of color excel in challenging courses such as honors, high honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes.
Study groups begin before the end of the first marking period and continue through the end of the school year. Study groups meet on Sundays from 2-4 p.m. at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue.
IMANI study groups have been offered in Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, English, and History. The sessions are led by certified high school teachers or professionals with formal training in the subject area in which they are tutoring.
Participating in peer mentoring and tutoring in a safe learning environment not only helps students gain a better grasp of subject matter, but also helps them feel less isolated in the classroom. This has been shown to be extremely beneficial in improving high achievement.
